Aspire, healthy energy

Aspire were incredibly generousness and sent me two full crates of their entire range of healthy energy drinks to review and review them I did!

Aspire have three flavours in their range, Apple and Acai, Mango Lemonade and Cranberry, all accompanied by the subtle taste of green tea.

I personally enjoyed the Mango Lemonade the most but couldn't really get past the green tea after taste, however my neighbour went absolutely wild for the Apple and Acai flavour, to the point I thought she was going to shed a tear when she thought my supply had run out!

Needless to say Aspire have at the very least gained a new customer in her.

But what sets Aspire apart from the more main stream energy drinks like red bull or monster?

Energy wise I feel that Aspire is a much cleaner sort of buzz with no sugar crash and zero calories.

With a 250 ml of red bull containing over 100 kcals just changing to Aspire could see you start dropping some of your excess blubber in no time at all with no real effort on your part.

Aspire boasts natural ingredients such a premium green tea, guarana seed extract, L- Carnitine ,Ginger root, vitamins C and B all working together to speed up your weight loss along side other benefits to your overall health.

I personally did not really enjoy the taste of Aspire but that doesn't mean that you won't, my neighbour is looking into booking a church to marry a multi pack of the stuff.

I certainly can't deny  how pleasant the energy it gave me was or how low in calories each can is.

Give it a try and you might fall in love too, click the link here to check out where you can get your mitts on some of your every own.

Opitat Coffee Body Scrubs

Optiat is another great find that I discovered at the Vegan Life Live Expo in London and they kindly offered me a discount to review their whole range!

Optiat is a start up company based in London, England making use of what would normally go to land fill and pollute the planet.

You might not think it but coffee grounds are very damaging to the environment, when they break down they become methane which contributes even more towards global warming carbon dioxide does, twenty times more!

Not only does Optiat save the world by using the coffee ground but it also saves the animals with their entire range being vegan.

Opitat is an acronym for One Persons Trash Is Another Person's Treasure which is a very appropriate name considering the grounds are normally thrown away buy the coffee shops they source them from.

Opitat have created a brilliant body scrub from coffee grounds and added four fragrances to them, just in case the smell of coffee alone doesn't do it for you!

You can take your pick from Peppermint, Vanilla, Mandarin and Lemongrass, with all them having different benefits thanks to the different essential oils.

Peppermint is antibacterial, helps with headaches, stomach upsets, curbs appetite, boosts energy, relaxes tight muscles and  boost mental focus.

If you really want to take your shower to the next level then pair the Peppermint scrub with a Help Me, I'm too Busy for Colds spray

Perfect first thing in a morning after a big gym session or a big gin session!

Lemongrass is again anti bacterial, helps ward off insects, boosts energy and reduces muscle pain.

Vanilla has surprising benefits. From helping to heal wounds to aiding in lifting depression and even increasing your sex drive, luckily vanilla also helps your sleep so you can blame that if you drift off to sleep afterwards.

Mandarin can help reduce stress and anxiety, it's an antiseptic and helps promote growth of new cells.

All four have the benefits of coffee such as helping with eczema, stretch marks and cellulite while also promoting cell renewal, the added shea butter and almond oil with help moisturise your skin.

I love the packaging and I was surprised at how earthy the scrub was in contrast to the clean and crisp packaging.

My skin felt amazing after using all of the scrubs but I must say I lean more towards the Peppermint and Lemongrass as I could smell them much more strongly than the Mandarin and Vanilla.

What I did find unusual was that when my friend used the Mandarin I could smell it from the other side of the room but when I used it on myself I really struggled to pick out it over the smell of the coffee.

The scrub, just like it's appearance has a very earthy consistency and you can really feel it scrubbing away at you, not the point where you are in pain etc but you can certainly feel it doing it's job.

I can't speak highly enough about Optiat, a great product doing great things for the environment and your skin.

If you fancy bagging yourself a bottle then please click here and check out their shop.

TrueNopal Cactus Water

2016 seemed to be all about Coconut Water and the trend seems to be still be going strong but even though I am partial to the odd carton I am hoping that True Nopal Cactus Water is going to take off in a big way!

I first came across it at the Vegan Life Live Expo and have been obsessed ever since, sadly the only place I have been able to get my hands on some is at my local Waitrose, which is almost 3 miles away!

The best thing for me about  cactus water is the taste.
It isn't a flavour that you need to get your head around like the first few times you have coconut water, with the cactus water having a fruitier taste,.

If you like the taste of fruit flavoured water then you will more than likely enjoy cactus water.

Cactus water is also less than half the calories of coconut water so if you are you an avid fan of coconut water and wanting an effortless way to cut some calories cactus water may be the way to go.

Cactus water seems to have a little bit of everything in it with 250ml containing 15% of your RDA of vitamins C and A.

16% of your calcium.

20% of your RDA if manganese and 13% of your magnesium.

A splash of your of all your B vitamins apart from B12.

7% of your iron and 5% of your zinc and 1.9g of fibre.

Cactus water does also have potassium but no where near as much as coconut water.

Cactus water also helps lower blood sugar, blood pressure and is anti inflammatory.

If you are near a Waitrose then pop in and treat yourself to some delicious True Napal Cactus Water!

Bell Peppers

I am sure you have seen orange, yellow, green and red peppers but going into detail about all four would be fair too much work for to do so I am going to focus on red peppers.

Red peppers are more mature than the others and destroy the others nutrient wise.

These bad boys aren't just there to give some added colour to your dish.

Peppers have anti cancer properties thanks to all of those antioxidants

Massive amounts of vitamin C with 92g giving you 157% of you RDA which is about 1.5x the amount you would get from a green pepper.

Full of Beta Carotene which your body uses to make into Vitamin A.

" But why can't I just get more vitamin A into my diet?" I hear you whine.

Well you could however vitamin A in high quantities is toxic.
If your body goes to the trouble of converting beta carotene it will only take as much as it needs, unlike my gold fish that I accidentally over fed who had no self control and ate it's self to death!

Peppers do have 16% of your daily vitamin if you are in the least bit worried anyway.

16% of your vitamin B6 which, among other things, will help convert glucose into energy.

11% of your daily B12 which helps with making DNA.

10% of your vitamin E which helps stop free radicals running rampant in your body and helps you look younger.
Peppers also have a high water content which will also help make you look younger.

Smaller amounts of vitamins B1, 2 and 3.

7% of your daily fibre.

To protect the more delicate antioxidants I eat them raw, either in a salad or toss them into a chili con carne.

Mushrooms

You might not have mush room on your plate for them but you should clear some space on your  for this fungi!

If you enjoyed that you have good taste and we can be friends.

Now on to why you should be chomping on mushrooms.

Mushrooms exposed to UV light is a source of vitamin D, which isn't destroyed when you cook them.
Interestingly enough it seems that mushrooms are the only plant based source of naturally occurring vitamin D with about 5% of you daily amount in 100g of mushroom.

Boost you immune system.

May prevent cancer.

100g of mushroom have about 13% selenium which helps boost your immune system, reduces asthma treatment, helps maintain thyroid function, helps prevent heart disease, helps fight ageing.

As none meat sources of selenium go mushrooms are pretty high on the list, although 100g of brazil nuts contain almost 3500% of your RDA.

100 grams of mushrooms is almost a quarter of you vitamin B2 and almost 20% of your vitamin B3 with some B6 and B12 thrown in to boot.

Aids weight loss.
Due to the B vitamins in mushrooms they help your metabolism because B vitamins help you turn sugar into energy rather then turning it into a spare tyre.

Apparently there is a mushroom based diet called the M plan where you replace one meal a day with mushrooms to reduce fat in woman from their thighs, waist, bums and upper arms while keeping their bust size.

I imagine eating a meal consisting of nothing but mushrooms you would be eating fewer calories than your normal  meal choice.
Mushrooms sate your appetite quite well so you would probably snack less as well.

The M plan would be a quick fix and I don't think many people would be able to stay on it for life in order to maintain their weight loss, but possibly a future 2 week challenge I can undertake.

Apples

An apple a day will keep the doctor away, well it certainly will if you pelt him with them!
But seriously apples will help you prevent a wide range of illnesses.

A medium apple contains around 14% of you vitamin C.

Around 5% of your potassium

17% of your dietary fibre, which will help you feel fuller which

5% of your vitamin B6.

There is also studies that suggest that apples have anti cancer, anti depression and anti inflammatory properties.

Apples also contain the same antioxidants as green tea ( catechin ) which has been shown to improve brain and muscle function, this means that apples will help help protect you from Alzheimer's disease in the same way green tea does.

They also have the same antioxidants found in coffee ( chlorgentic acid ) which has been shown to lower blood sugar and aid weight loss.

Lower cholesterol which reduces the risk of heart disease.

Apples help clean your teeth, this is not a replacement from frequent brushing/ flossing and you should also be aware that too many apples can weaken the enamel of your teeth.

Help with constipation.

Apples apparently give you as much energy as coffee in a morning, I am on the fence about this one but if anyone has had any experience of this let me know.

Remember to get the full benefit from your apples then you need to eat the skin.

As far as I can tell green apples have a more nutrients

than red but to be honest I would say eat which ever you prefer the taste of.

If you ever get chance to try a Jazz Apple then take it, they are possibly the most delicious apples in the world, I tried them at the Body Expo this year and wish I had signed up to monthly deliveries  of them!

What are Antioxidants?

Every faddy super food is apparently jammed packed full of them and you get told they are good for you but what are antioxidants?

You have cells in your body and sometimes they go wild and become free radicals.
Free radicals are bad news, they go around damaging other cells and can potentially lead to cancer.

But never fear antioxidants are here!
Hip hip hoorah!
Antioxidants destroy free radicals.

Vitamins like A, C and E are  antioxidants and vitamins but that doesn't mean that all vitamins qualify for this dual status.

You can get antioxidants from the food you eat with some the of best being most berries, dark leafy vegetables,  fish, potatoes and nuts.

Green and white tea are notorious for being full of antioxidants and partly why smoothies are so popular.

Check out Dundedin Tea and pick up a charming Manatea to defuse your leaves.

When out shopping think of a rainbow food, different colours give you different antioxidants, beige is not in the rainbow so chips, pasties and pies do not count you cheeky scamp.

Onion

They might make you cry but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be getting them in your belly.

Onions contain vitamins A, C, E and B6.

Lower blood pressure/ thin blood, more so in red onions.

Has Potassium, iron, sulphur calcium and fibre.

Has antiviral, antibacterial  and anticancer properties

Onions are best eaten raw.
Yes I know you were thinking of frying them up to slather your hot dogs in, sorry to disappoint!
I like to use red onion in salads.

To stop your tears when preparing you onions by either chilling them before hand.

You can also keep water nearby so the the sulphur with be attracted to the water in the glass next to you rather than head for the water in your eyes.

But which onion is better for you?

Brown onions have more fibre but if you are favour an onions anticancer properties rather than forming a decent poo then always pick the red ones.

A fun fact for you!

I once ate an entire raw onion, it burnt the inside of my mouth for 4 days but I did win a shot for my trouble!

Good source of fibre.

Has some zinc and potassium.

Helps prevent and stop the spread of prostate cancer.

Good for your heart health, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, if you are taking anything for high cholesterol or high blood pressure then please check with you doctor if you decide to add pomegranate to your diet.

Boost your Testosterone!

Following on from my previous post on Testosterone I thought I best let you know about how you can boost your testosterone levels!

Vitamin D:

Vitamin D  deficiency has links to low testosterone levels, with low testosterone levels and low vitamin D levels both being linked to depression there is no wonder you feel like crap in the darker months!

The best way to combat this is to take a supplement and getting out in the sun more.
If your are free spirited enough embark on some naked sunbathing! According to a study I came across exposing your meat and two veg to sunlight increases your vitamin D absorption by 200%! If I come across it again then I will post a link.

You can also chow down salmon, tuna, sardines, eggs, cow's milk and shrimp.

Zinc:

If you are deficient in zinc than you are probably low in testosterone as well.
Add beef, lamb, turkey, seeds, quinoa, beans and shrimp to your shopping lists!

Magnesium:

Grab some quinoa, spinach and pumpkin seeds! It seems that magnesium helps improve your testosterone levels by improving sleep quality and thus decreases your cortisol levels.

Resveratrol:

The stuff you get from red wine, other than a hangover!
Resveratrol has been shown to increase blood testosterone by 50%! If you can't handle some red wine opt for balsamic vinegar, raisins, blueberries, cranberries or dark chocolate!

Get enough fat:

Getting enough testosterone levels saturated and monounstautrated fats in your diet with help maintain healthy testosterone levels.

Bromelain:

Bromelain is an enzyme found in bananas and pineapples and will help increase your testosterone levels.

Garlic:

Garlic will increase your testosterone levels and speed up how fast your body synthesises protein, be careful though other than giving you smelly breath too much garlic will lower your testosterone levels!

Reduce stress:

Stress can reek havoc on your on your body, brain and testosterone levels!
The are tons of ways to lower your stress levels from exercise, giving up smoking, limit your alcohol and caffeine, sleep and eat healthy foods.

Vitamin C:

Appears to protect testosterone from harm and lowers stress levels!
You can stick to your oranges or opt for kale, broccoli, spinach or some berries!

Whey Protein:

Having a protein shake after exercise lowers your cortisol levels and encourages muscle growth and repair.

Train big muscle groups:

Training big muscle groups with give you a big testosterone boost, particularly when training your lower body, add some squats, dead lifts, pull ups and bench presses to your workout.

What to avoid:

Gluten can have a negative effect on your testosterone levels.

Foods high in estrogen like peas, soy, flax seed. tofu and sesame seeds.

Licorice can block testosterone production.

Polyunsaturated fats and trans fats lower testosterone levels.

Peppermint and Spearmint may hinder your testosterone levels.

Kale

Off the back on my review on  Kale Chips I thought I would give raw Kale a look, I am sure that awful Gwyneth Paltrow will be most pleased!

Kale an amazing amount of vitamin A and C.

An insane amount of vitamin K.

Helps boost testosterone.

Good levels of calcium, iron, manganese, copper, potassium and magnesium.

Lowers cholesterol.

Helps look after your eyes.

                                                   Can help prevent cancer.

I use Kale in salads, smoothies or just a plate filler with some meat, not everyone is a fan of green vegetables so add some garlic and butter to make it more suited to your tastes.

Garlic

I add garlic to everything I can and other than keeping vampires away it also has other great benefits!

Garlic helps boost the immune system.

Can help lower blood pressure.

Helps lower cholesterol.

Boosts testosterone levels.

Can help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Good levels of Manganese, vitamin C and vitamin B6.

Can possibly increase athletic performance.

On a side note garlic also repels spiders!

If you are lazy like me then you can get some Very Lazy Garlic from the supermarket, it won't stink out your fridge like cloves can, if you really can't deal with the taste or the smell you can also get garlic supplements.

Coconut Meat

Everyone seems to always be raving about how wonderful coconut water and coconut oil are but what about the meat?

Coconut meat has good levels of fibre, 80g gives you 29% of you RDA

Helps boost testosterone levels.

More than half of your RDA of Manganese which helps your body break down fats and proteins, helps your immune and nervous systems and also helps your body use other nutrients like vitamin E and iron.

13% of your RDA of potassium per 80g which is great for helping your body balance your fluid levels.

Now the really interesting thing that I came across is to do with the fat that's in coconut meat.

Coconut meat it's self has a high amount of saturated fat, however the type of fat in coconut gets broken down into energy very quickly so it does not get chance to get laid down as fat in your body.

I found that to be quite interesting but the bit that tipped me over the edge was it's potential to help people suffering from dementia.

Your brain likes to get it's energy from glucose but diseases like Alzheimer's make it harder for your brain to do this.

This is where coconut meat steps into the ring because your brain can happily get fuel from fat that has been broken down from the coconut!

For more in depth reading just google coconut and Alzheimer's.

Sweet Potato

Sweet potato seems everywhere right now, you can't mention it without some odd little hipster type creaming themselves over the a fond memory of sweet potato fries they had with their cheeky Nandos last night!

This is with good reason, I love sweet potato and it's got loads of goodness packed inside.

More vitamin A than you can shake a stick at with 100g having 384% of your RDA!

A decent about of vitamin C with 34% of your RDA.

25% of your Manganese.

More potassium than a banana!

Help boost testosterone levels.

A good amount of fibre, if you eat the skins!

May reduce the risk of breast cancer in pre menopausal women.

May reduce ovarian cancer in post menopausal women.

Can help relieve stress.

Helps heart health by reducing the hardening of your arteries.

I tend to mash my sweet potatoes but this means losing out on the skins!
I used to roast them but this made them too sweet so if anyone has any cooking suggestions let me know.

Eating a lot of sweet potato can make your skin and nails go orange but it isn't harmful and should go back to normal if your calm down with all the sweet potato you've been binging on.

In the mean time just remember that the futures bright, the futures orange!

Acne

Have you got the body of a god but the skin of toad? Hopefully I can help you out!

Loads of guys that workout seem to have problems with ache, mainly on there shoulder and back or as I have affectionately dubbed Backne.

There are a few reasons for acne, it could be diet, hormones or oily skin.
I am going to go through each of these and try clear them up.

Diet.

I am lucky because I seem to be able to eat anything I like and not really have any ill effects, well apart from the dreaded ring sting the day after curry night!

Others are not so lucky, a high sugar/fat diet cause your body to make more sebum which can lead to acne breakouts, if you are keeping a food diary try and add when you have your breakouts so you can try and eliminate any foods that seem to be causing your acne.
Less high fat and sugar foods more lean meats and veggies please!

Hormones.

Anything from increased testosterone from supplements to stress can cause you have to breakouts.

While you are recording what you are eating also record stress levels and any supplements you may be taking and for ladies of course there is Aunt Flow visiting to consider as well!
Stopping supplements is easy peasy but finding the root of your stress and giving it the boot may be trickier but not as tricky as stopping your menstrual cycle!

Oily Skin.

If your skin is oily then you probably know acne's cruel touch all to well!

If your body produces too much sebum and oxidises then it blocks your pores and makes a black, which is nothing to do with how clean you are, that's why washing black heads doesn't get rid of them.

You could go and get some Benzoyl Perozide but this may make matters worse, getting antioxidants from your food is anther route you can take that will see you have improves in your entire body rather than just your skin, look out for zinc, vitamin A and vitamin E.

There are also White heads that can be inflamed and red, these are the ones that one can't help but pop!

Don't ever pop your spots, not only does increase the amount of of acne it can also lead to scarring.

To prevent getting whites make sure to exfoliate your skin, change your bedding regularly, get out of your sweaty gym clothes as soon as you can and get a shower! You might even notice your backne even appears in the shape of your gym vest.

While you are waiting for your acne to calm down you can try hemorrhoid cream which reduces inflammation, moisturises, contains vitamin E, reduces itching and restricts blood flow to the skin!

Dundedin Tea

I was kindly sent some delicious tea by the Dundedin Tea company along with a lovely Manatea infuser and a bag for life!

I was chose 3 teas from their selection and settled on two green tea verities and one white tea.

To be honest I would of sampled their entire stock,
I love a good cuppa!

The first tea I tried was the white tea, called Silver Moonlight.

I have been meaning to try white tea for a long time, it's lesser known than green tea which is a shame because it's sweeter and has even more antioxidants!

I really enjoyed the Sliver Moonlight tea, it was mild and had no bitterness to it like the green tea I normally buy sometimes has.

Next the Apple Martini green tea! It smelt very strong, I could smell it from across the room as it brewed and was pleasantly surprised by it's subtle flavour.

The other green tea I tried was the Long Island Strawberry which tasted like actual strawberries, as opposed to strawberry flavoured like milkshakes or ice cream, again I really enjoyed it.

I am not the biggest fan of fruit teas, in fact if I was offered one for free I would turn it down, but seen as a lot of people I speak tell me they don't like the taste of green tea I opted to sample these two fruit green teas and I was really happy that I gave them a chance.

Out of the two fruit teas I enjoyed the Strawberry one more but would happily get my lips round a cup of Apple Martini again, even if it isn't alcoholic!

The website and packets are great, they give you information about levels of caffeine, antioxidants, where the tea has been grown and a description of the flavours found in the tea.

The Dunedin Tea company are a luxury brand with an affordable price, instead of buying cheap, poor quality tea in bleached tea bags you can get high quality tea leaves that smell amazing, taste amazing and induce envy into everyone that claps their eyes on Fred the Manatea!

The link between selling tea leaves and manatees is loose but I don't care, I love it!

I intend to go a green tea challenge later in the year and will be looking to Dundedin to keep me well stocked.

Give their website a look by clicking here and pick up your own  infusing Manatea and a fancy tea for yourself or better yet buy some for me!

If you are more into coffee than give my review of Twist's Protein Coffee a look.

Green Tea

Green tea is always been raved about in the fitness world and I myself do enjoy a cup when my  friend Irene pops in! But why is it so funking good? Well hold your horses and I will get to that!

Green tea contains loads of antioxidants, the compounds that seek out cancer causing free radicals and give them a karate chop round the chops!

It also has caffeine, not as much as coffee so if you can't quite handle the buzz green tea might be a good alternative, it also has an amino acid that when combined with the caffeine can help your brain function and lower feelings of anxiety!

There are a few different takes on whether or not green tea boosts your metabolic rate but seen as it is an ingredient in every weight loss aid I have come across I am going to be a sheep and go with the flock on this one! Caffeine certainly boosts your metabolism and the other benefits of drinking green tea add tot he apply so stick the kettle on and have yourself a cup!

Green tea lowers the risk of the most common cancers in both men and women!
Male green tea drinkers lower their risk of prostate cancer by 48% and the lasses lowered their chance of breast cancer by 22%! If you don't want a finger having a root around up your bum get drinking lads!

Green tea may be able to protect our brains from the 2 most common neural degenerative  diseases suffered by humans, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

Green tea can improve your dental health and help with your stink breath.

Green tea reduces the risk of the dying from the 2 biggest killers in the world, heart disease and strokes by reducing your cholesterol.

To get the most out your green tea don't use milk because it can lower the amount of antioxdients that your lovely green has. If you can get your hands on some try some white tea which is sweeter than green tea and has even more antioxidents!

I struggle to find the time to sit and enjoy green so I have also bought the extract, I am not convinced if it's better than drinking the tea because the extract could be any of the antioxdients that green tea contains.

If you are interested in getting some I buy mine from myprotein.com and it's £4.99 for 120 pills, perfect if you don't have much time or if you don't like the taste of the drink.

Drink yourself slimmer!

No I am not on about some miracle shake made from the slime from a recently discovered sea slug, I am talking drinks that are cheap and easy to get your hands on,sound good so far?

Water, it doesn't need to be some fancy bottled water from Megan Fox's toilet, tap water will do fine!

A some of the time when we feel hungry we are actually just thirsty but because we do get some water from what we eat and the  that we are greedy means your body will say you must eat that pie!
A easy tip is to try drinking some water before sinking your teeth into a slice of cake and see if you you were really hungry or just wanting to feed your face and if you really were hungry you will not eat as much and reduce calories that way, just watch out for the vultures around you going after your left overs!

Your body loves water and needs it to preform at it's best. This includes your bodies ability to digest fat.
Your liver plays a massive role in our digestion of practically everything that goes into our bodies from food to even pollution. Now if you are dehydrated then your liver being the caring bastard that it is will help out your kidneys instead of sorting that awful fat from getting stored on your belly!

Water will also boost your metabolism, drinking 5 glasses of water a day could mean you lose 5 pounds of fat a year and if there you are swapping high calorie drinks for a cool refreshing glass zero calorie of water you could be seeing the pounds melt off in a matter of weeks!

Black coffee it's calorie free and it's caffeine content with both boost your energy levels, boost your metabolism and that big, strong mug of magic also encourages your body to increase an enzyme that helps your body digest fat! Beware though if you are if you are sensitive to caffeine, have trouble with your heart or are pregnant then proceed with caution! Luckily I got myself a test and I can confidently say I am not with child!

Green or white tea are both packed full of antioxidants that will help your body fight free radicals, cancer causing cells, and will also boost your metabolic rate 4-5 cups a day could help you burn an extra 70 calories a day! Green tea also contains caffeine but not as much as coffee!
