Right off the back of completing Tough Mudder me and our Irene signed up for Primal Stampede an urban assault course right in our back yard at the Leeds Docks and with a price tag of £20 for 3.5 km, 2 laps and 10 obstacles to complete we thought it would be as easy as a stroll down the canal!
Run by Primal Gym in Leeds with the help of local sponsors and dedicated volunteers we had a fun, if not soggy day with make shift obstacles ranging from carrying a sand, scaling an 8ft wall and wading through skips of cold, muddy water the team did an excellent job of making the best use of the space available to them, with some obstacles working out better than others, the slip n slide being a nice idea and a welcome change of pace but it practice unless you are part penguin no one was ever going slide much more than half way, in fact Irene choose to walk it!
Everyone set off in heats which was decided by the colour of your headband and letter of the alphabet, we were late as the registration process took a longer than expected, bearing in mind we had come been down to the gym the day before to confirm times etc and the 15 minute recommendation was not too little time for the amount of people queueing to sign wavers and collect their head bands so we had to wait another hour before we could set off in the next orange heat.
With this being the first year of Primal Stampede and hopefully not the last I hope in future we are given the option having our waver emailed before hand .
We stood in a tent with a smoke machine for company as we were instructed to jump up and down and get pumped then off we went, running through tires and off into the distance.
Luckily Primal gym offer free use of their changing rooms and showers, although you will have to pay a deposit to use the lockers.
If you really can't face crawling under a cargo net in possibly the most grit filled muddy water I have ever come across then you can pay with 10 burpees! With me and Irene not doing any training in the 3 weeks between Tough Mudder and Primal Stampede we certainly felt it the next day but no where near a bad as after Tough Mudder!
It's a shame the canal couldn't be incorporated into the course and sadly due to the local residents the volunteers had to keep their encouragement on the quiet side.
I did feel a little robbed when the price of the tee shirts were lower by 50% the day after the event but with all the profits going to Cash for Kids and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, free photos from the day and a goody bag, I couldn't stayed annoyed for that long, what can I say? I loves me a bargain!
